Italy Officially Launches the Digital Nomad Visa
Italy made its Digital Nomad Visa official with a decree published on February 29, 2024, opening the doors to remote workers from around the world. After years of being one of the few major European countries without a dedicated visa for location-independent professionals, Italy now offers a clear and structured pathway.
Who Can Apply?
Test Paragraph
The visa is aimed at non-EU nationals who work remotely for employers or clients located outside of Italy. Both employees and freelancers are eligible, provided they can demonstrate:
- A minimum annual income of €28,000 (approximately €2,333/month) from remote work
- Health insurance covering medical expenses, hospitalization, and repatriation with at least €30,000 in coverage
- Adequate accommodation in Italy (rental contract or proof of property)
- A clean criminal record
Duration and Renewal
The initial residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) is issued for one year. It can be renewed locally at the Questura (provincial police headquarters) as long as you continue to meet the employment, income, and insurance requirements. Unlike some other European digital nomad visas, there is currently no cap on the total number of renewals.
Important Limitations
There are a few restrictions to be aware of:
- No local employment: You cannot work for Italian companies or take on Italian clients under this visa
- Family sponsorship changes (2025): As of 2025, digital nomad visa holders can no longer sponsor children over 18 or parents, even if those family members are financially dependent on the holder
- Tax obligations: If you spend more than 183 days per year in Italy, you will likely be considered a tax resident and subject to Italian income tax on worldwide income
How Italy Compares
Italy's income threshold of €28,000/year is lower than most competitors. For comparison:
- Spain: Requires 200% of the SMI, approximately €33,000/year
- Portugal (D8): Requires 4x the minimum wage, approximately €44,000/year
- Greece: Requires €3,500/month, approximately €42,000/year
- Malta: Requires €42,000/year
This makes Italy the most financially accessible digital nomad destination in Southern Europe, combined with its world-renowned lifestyle, cuisine, and cultural heritage.
