Portugal D7 vs D8 Visa: Which One Fits Your Situation?
Portugal's D7 and D8 visas are often confused, but they serve very different purposes. Choosing the wrong one can lead to application delays, rejections, or legal complications down the road. This guide breaks down the key differences to help you make the right choice.
The D7: Passive Income Visa
The D7, sometimes called the "retirement visa," is designed for people who can support themselves through passive income. This includes:
- Pensions (government or private)
- Rental income from property
- Investment dividends and interest
- Royalties
- Any income that does not require active work
As of 2026, the minimum income requirement is €920/month (approximately €11,040/year) for the main applicant, with increases for dependents. This is one of the lowest income thresholds for any residence visa in Western Europe.
Important: If you earn active employment income (salary, freelance fees), the D7 is not the right visa for you, even if you also have passive income. Portuguese immigration authorities have become stricter about this distinction since the D8 was introduced.
The D8: Digital Nomad Visa
Introduced in October 2022, the D8 is Portugal's dedicated visa for remote workers. It's designed for non-EU nationals who work for employers or clients located outside Portugal. Both employees and freelancers qualify.
The income requirement is significantly higher: 4x Portugal's minimum wage, which in 2026 is approximately €3,680/month (€44,160/year) for the main applicant. A spouse adds 50%, and each child adds 30%.
Key D8 requirements:
- Proof of remote employment or freelance contracts with non-Portuguese entities
- Tax registration in Portugal
- Adequate accommodation (note: Airbnb is usually rejected as proof; you need a proper rental contract)
- Health insurance or access to the Portuguese healthcare system
Side-by-Side Comparison
Here is how the two visas compare on the factors that matter most:
- Income type: D7 = passive only; D8 = active remote work
- Minimum income: D7 = €920/month; D8 = €3,680/month
- Can you work? D7 = no active work (passive income only); D8 = yes, for foreign employers/clients
- Initial duration: Both start with a 1-year visa, then 2-year residence permits
- Pathway to PR: Both lead to permanent residency after 5 years
- Pathway to citizenship: Both lead to citizenship eligibility after 5 years of legal residence
- Tax regime: Neither qualifies for the old NHR (now ended); standard Portuguese tax rules apply unless you qualify for IFICI
Which Should You Choose?
The answer is straightforward:
- You live off pensions, savings, or investment income and don't actively work: choose the D7
- You work remotely for a company or clients outside Portugal: choose the D8
- You have both passive and active income: choose the D8, since it covers your work activity. You can still receive passive income alongside it.
